Why wouldn’t I be depressed?

“If you favourite grandmother had died,
If your best friend had moved away,
And you dog had died,
Your parents had divorced
And you got bullied when you went to work,
How would you feel?

Quote from a child 2001

I think you and I both know how we would feel, very sad and very, very unhappy (to say the least) and if we stayed that way for a period of time, there is a high probability that we would become depressed. Yet it doesn’t seem to occur to us that children could suffer from depression.

So how as a parent can you know if your child is depressed or at risk of being depressed? This chapter condenses a mammoth amount of literature from some of the world’s experts on childhood disorders. There are checklists that you can utilise to help you decide if you need to seek professional help for your child.
